
Open the septic tank lid and check the water level.
This is the first and most important indicator of where a problem may exist.
If the water level is normal:
The issue is likely in the plumbing line inside the house or in the pipe running from the house to the tank.
If the water level is high:
The problem is likely beyond the tank.
Possible causes include:
Inspect the line leading to the drainfield:
Using a sewer snake to clear the outlet line and if the snake pulls back mud, this may indicate the line is damaged or broken.
Observe the tank during pumping:
If a large amount of wastewater quickly flows back into the tank after pumping, it is a strong sign that the drainfield is saturated or failing.
