How to Find Your Tank

It is essential to know the exact location of septic tank(s) and all access lids. Without this information, diagnosing problems becomes much more difficult. All septic tank lids are to be exposed prior to any services or additional fees will be incurred.

To locate your septic tank and lids, follow these steps:

  • Obtain a copy of your as-built / record drawing from your local county health department. This drawing should show the size and location of your septic tank(s) and drain field.
  • Use the triangulation measurements provided on the drawing to locate the tank, typically referencing the center of the inlet chamber lid.
  • Dig a hole approximately 30 inches in diameter down to the inlet chamber lid.
  • Open the lid and identify the end wall where the 4-inch sewer pipe enters the tank from the house.
  • From the center of the inlet lid, measure toward the opposite end of the tank to locate the outlet lid. The distance between lids varies by tank size:
    • 1,000-gallon tank: 6–6.5 feet
    • 1,250-gallon tank: 7–7.5 feet
    • 1,500-gallon tank: 8.5–9 feet
  • Dig to expose the outlet chamber access lid.

The  as-built / record drawing should be accurate and you’ll locate the lids quickly. If not, continue carefully digging until you find them, and update your drawing with the correct locations.

If your lids are buried deeper than 8 inches below grade, it is recommended to install risers to bring access closer to the surface (ideally to ground level or within 8 inches). This is a current standard requirement.  Materials and installation services are often available through septic service providers.
