The Importance of a Soil Analysis

A soil analysis is a critical step in designing and pricing a septic system. Without it, it is not possible to determine the appropriate system type or provide an accurate cost estimate. 

This analysis may include:

• A percolation (perc) test using a drill rig, or
• Test holes dug up to 8 feet deep with a backhoe    

During the evaluation, engineers assess several key soil characteristics, including:

• Soil type (such as sand, clay, sandstone, claystone, or bedrock)
• Soil structure and layering (gradation)
• Porosity and drainage capability

These factors determine how well the soil can absorb and treat wastewater, which directly impacts the design, size, and cost of the septic system.

Another key factor is the number of bedrooms in the home (not bathrooms), which determines system sizing.

Although replacing a septic system can feel like a major expense, proper planning and working with experienced licensed professionals can make the process much smoother.
