Troubleshooting Problems

Here are steps to troubleshoot your standard gravity septic system:

Open the septic tank lid and check the water level.
This is the first and most important indicator of where a problem may exist.

    • Take photos of the inside of the tank and water level this may help a septic technician diagnose the issue by phone.

If the water level is normal:
The issue is likely in the plumbing line inside the house or in the pipe running from the house to the tank.

      • This could be a simple clog or blockage.
      • A sewer snake may be able to clear the line.
      • If the pipe has collapsed or deteriorated, it will need to be repaired or replaced.

If the water level is high:
The problem is likely beyond the tank.

Possible causes include:

      • Excess sludge buildup in the tank
      • A clogged outlet line leaving the tank
      • Drainfield (drain field) failure due to:
        • Soil saturation
        • Crushed lines from heavy vehicles
        • Shifting soil
        • Root intrusion

Inspect the line leading to the drainfield:
Using a sewer snake to clear the outlet line and if the snake pulls back mud, this may indicate the line is damaged or broken.

Observe the tank during pumping:
If a large amount of wastewater quickly flows back into the tank after pumping, it is a strong sign that the drainfield is saturated or failing.
